Course Regulations

1.A. Transitional
Students who have completed all coursework except for the thesis prior to 2005 will complete the Master of Theological Studies under the rules that applied at the time of their first enrolment. Students whose coursework was not completed prior to 2005 may elect either to complete their degree under the rules that applied at the time of their first enrolment or under the rules of the Master of Theology and may be granted such credit as the Dean may determine.
1. Entry requirement
Entry requirement is:
  1. A person may first enrol for the degree only if that person has completed the requirements of-
    1. The BCT Bachelor of Theology, with a GPA of at least 5.00 or equivalent, either over the last 80cp of the BTh or for their best 12 results in the BTh; or

  2. A student who has completed the requirements of the BCT Graduate Certificate in Theology, with a prior non-theology degree, may then apply for provisional enrolment in the Master of Theology program. A decision to allow the student to proceed will be based on a GPA of at least 6.50 in the Graduate Certificate in Theology and a clearly delineated program of studies including a viable thesis proposal.
  3. Where 15 years or more have elapsed since the completion of entry requirements as set out in (a) or (b) above, enrolment in the course may be allowed at the discretion of the Academic Dean on the basis of evidence that, in the intervening period, the candidate has:
    1. Used their theological knowledge in a way deemed appropriate as preparation for postgraduate theological study; or
    2. Engaged in sustained formal study.
2. Course of study
A candidate must obtain 80 credit points of coursework at assessment level 4, and 40 credit points for the thesis, as follows:

  5. Complete 40 credit points for a thesis in the area of specialisation.
3. Duration of course
Unless the Committee of Deans determines otherwise, a candidate must pursue the program over three semesters if full-time or at least six semesters if part-time, with a maximum period for completion of 16 semesters, except where an extension is approved by the Academic Committee.
4. Must achieve grade of PP
To obtain credit for a unit, a candidate must achieve a grade of at least PP.
5. Specialised Studies units
Students may undertake more than one Specialised Study unit in a particular field, but must have permission from the relevant Academic Dean to ensure they are fulfilling the requirements of the course.
6. Enrolment in thesis

7. Credit for other study
  1. Credit transfer will be allowed as follows:
    1. In accordance with the provisions as set out in the College's Credit Transfer Guidelines.
    2. 40cp credit will be allowed for a completed BCT GDipTheol.

  2. No transfer of credit will be allowed from the Graduate Certificate in Theology.
8. Credit transfer to Graduate Diploma in Theology
